Oh, I love it when I find stationery at a great price!

While doing some cross border shopping yesterday, I scored some very adorable Japanese products. On the left, painted wood strawberries with each day of the week and a little wooden clothes peg on the back. Top right, plastic drawstring bag with bunnies that will be perfect for the Princess' soggy swimsuit after swim lessons this spring. And for me, a roll of paper tape decorated with Hello Kitty.

The postman was just here! And look at what he brought!

It's the vase I won for my huge bid of $2! This pretty little milk glass vase stands only 5" high and will be a great addition to my forest nest. I can't wait to get it home and fill it with some pretty flowers that have been arriving at the local stores.

A soft place to play

Almost 3 months ago we installed new flooring on the main floor of our little nest in the forest. What I didn't realize at the time was that our kids would miss the warmth of carpeting for playing on. They still also enjoy laying on their bellies and watching tv from down there. So, before the holidays, I thought that it would easy to find an area rug that both DH and I could agree on. W-R-O-N-G.

I'm happy to say that after going through 8 or 9 other stores, we found one that we thought would work. Brought it home, and the kids were immediately unrolling it for us and put it in place. So, it's received the stamp of approval from everyone in the house, doggie included.

I know that red can be too intense for some, and I was worried myself. However, after having this in the family room for the last 3 days, I must say that I love seeing it against the new dark floors. It injects the colour that was needed.

Now...my search for new couches and armchairs begin.

Advent Calendar

In just a few more days, the kids in this little forest home will be counting down the days until the jolly old St. Nick arrives. To help the youngest in her countdown, I thought it might be fun to make an advent calendar that's different from the usual store bought ones that I've given her in the past.

So, ta-da! Here is a little something that I was inspired to create by this Color Me Pretty post on Decor8.

I'd like to do a better job of hanging this creation, but that will have to wait until I've found some of those removable hooks. But, I've happy with how quickly this came together.

Autumn fun

October came and went in a blur of activity!

Here's what happened:

- Had new floors installed on our main floor. We choose to put in dog friendly laminate instead of the bamboo that I've been wanting. Painted the new baseboards a darker shade of grey from the same paint chip. Looks great, and I will have to share photos when I have the finishing touches done.

- Visited the pumpkin patch with my darling princess and her classmates. What a great field trip that was.... the sun was shining, not too cold for it being so late in October. And the kids had a blast visiting the animals in the barn, going through the corn maze and of course, picking their own kid-sized pumpkins.

- Halloween. Princess chose to be a fairy princess, complete with wings, wand and fairy dust on her hair and face. I was a very proud mom, she looked so cute!

Recipe: Creamy Chicken and Shrimp with Bacon and Corn

Last night's dinner was so easy and yummy that I thought I should share this dish that is ready in less than 30 minutes! I've adapted it from the Creamy Shrimp with Corn and Bacon recipe from Real Simple.

Now, I have a hubby and son who love their meat, so I also added a bit of chicken and about a quarter cup of shredded parmesan cheese. Not a scrap was left on their plates! That is a winning dish in my books!

Long lost chicken recipe - found

On the weekend, while going through a very deep junk drawer I came across a long lost recipe for Honey Mustard Chicken. I prepared this last night and was told by my picky DH that he would love for that dinner to make it into my regular repertoire.

So, since I like to share what I can, here it is...

Honey Mustard Chicken

1/3 c. honey
1/3 grainy mustard
1 tbsp dried dill weed
1 - 2 tbsp grated orange peel, fresh
2 - 3 lbs of chicken pieces (bone in, with skin)

Mix first 4 ingredients together. Rinse and pat dry chicken, and place on a roasting pan. Spread honey-mustard mix under AND on top of the skin. Bake for about 35-40 mins in a 400F oven.

This was awesome with mashed potatoes and roasted brocoli. The kidlets ate up their dinners and asked for seconds (a rare occurance in this household )

It's been a busy, busy summer, but I always find time to shop for home decor! :)

While in Kamloops for a little family reunion, I spied an Urban Barn and just had to take a peek when I saw the SALE signs posted on the windows. I didn't manage to buy anything, since our car was already very full with passengers and luggage. However, I'm now wanting to buy one of these cute doormats for our front door:

Currently, we have the most utilitarian doormat in black, which is not very welcoming if you ask me, so it's time for something a bit better. Which would you choose?

One inexpensive way to decorate is to customized pieces bought at a big box store, such as Ikea. Well, I've been on the hunt for some unique and pretty knobs for a rather bland storage unit. If I change then knobs from the strange looking little silver pulls to something with a bit of colour, I think I'd be much happier with this much utilized bookcase.

Oh yum, I will making this family favourite for a gathering this long weekend and thought I would share. It's so easy and quick to make, AND it's perfect for a summer meal!

19 oz. can of black beans, rinsed
12 oz. can of whole kernel corn, rinsed
2 diced ripe tomatoes
4 green onions, chopped
1/4 cup of roughly chopped fresh cilantro (coriander)

Dressing:
2 tbsp. red wine vinegar
1 clove garlic, minced
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. black pepper
1/4 cup vegetable oil

I wish I had a picture of this all made up, as it's quite colourful! If you do happen to make this, let me know if you tweeked it in any way, as I always make it according to the recipe. Any suggestions to make this better (if that's possible!)

A New Direction

Yes, I'm still here. Posting has taken a backseat to, well, life. I've been busy planning for some vacation time in the summer. We are hoping to take about 2 weeks away from city life and get to the mountains and beauty of our 2 western provinces of BC and Alberta.

And, I've been daydreaming a lot about what direction I should go in for Amie Hartman Designs. During this daydreaming, I've been reading a lot of home decorating blogs, visiting online decor shops, antique shopping, and crocheting a runner for my dining room buffet.

I have decided that I get a lot of joy in creating with my hands, be it a greeting card, an altered coffee tin, or a crocheted coaster. So, I am going to expand on what I have to offer in my shop.

My shop will now also include crocheted home and personal care items, more altered items and of course, my greeting cards. So, I hope you get a chance to visit my shop and let me know what you think. I open to some helpful advice, as I'm always trying to learn. Here's a small glimpse at one addition:

Long time no post!

Life has been hectic lately. So, my blogging generally suffers as a result.

But, today, I took a little break to do a bit of blog surfing and came across the cutest free printable apple notes courtesy of Ez over at Creature Comforts. If you have not been to her site, you should check it out. It is one of the prettiest blogs out there in the blogging world, in my humble opinion.

I am so happy that it is Friday! We are celebrating the Victoria Day long weekend with a few BBQ's, parades and picnics, so I'm really praying for sunshine.

I scored this cute little book while perusing the aisles at Home Sense yesterday. I plan on making some of the bags that I found within it's pages for the little princess' in my life, especially DD and my darling nieces.

My interest in this craft is at an all-time high. And I've bought enough yarn to make my next 3 projects, so I hope this obsession is not too short-lived or I will have one upset hubby!

Do you ever do that? You know, get so absorbed in a craft that you keep buying supplies, even though you probably won't be using them anytime soon? Or am I the only one with this disease?

The Need to Create

Almost 30 years ago, my dear mother taught me how to crochet because I just kept bugging her to teach me one of her crafts. My mom learned these crafts out of necessity, at a time when store bought sweaters and clothing was just too expensive and hard to come by when living in a small town. So, she had figured that her daughters, who would eventually end up growing up in the city would not be too interested. She was wrong. The need to create with our own hands, has been deeply coded into our DNA. We've inherited this creative gene that has been passed on from my grandfather (a musician and chinese opera coach), to my mother, to my sister and I, and now, to my own DD.

And while I have perhaps not completely mastered the art of crochet, I do love it. So, I recently challenged myself to create something that I could put on display. And I chose this pretty medallion trivet as my first project in many years....

This took me about a week, not bad, considering I was only working on it during gymnastic practices, hockey practices and the few minutes I had to myself after the kidlets went to bed. Depending on your screen, it may or may not look like the light aqua blue that it is. And it is super thick, so I do need to be careful of what sits atop it. Perhaps a nice large vase of flowers? I think I could treat myself to flowers on a weekly basis, right?

Lazy Sunday and a Creative Home

Oh, what a wonderfully lazy Sunday! We spent part of the morning with family and then, nothing but relaxation. I bought myself a copy of Creative Home. Sadly, it's the last issue :(. Another one bites the dust.

I was also able to complete my crocheted Medallion Trivet. Need to snap a photo of it, as I'm very proud of how it turned out! I did it a light aqua, much like the colour of my kitchen. Now, I'm working on a table runner. I was inspired by one I saw on Decor8 .

What a lovely week! Despite the princess having a nasty cold, my super-wicked allergies, a leaky tap, and a huge furnace servicing bill, I have been very thankful that I have not set foot into an ice arena this week.

Don't think for a minute that I don't enjoy watching my not-so-little prince flying around the ice on his magic skates with his beloved hockey stick, but after 7 months of 4-5 ice times a week, I was ready for a break. This is the very reason why Papercraftinghockeymom has not had an updated post in many months. I just can't keep up with 2 blogs. So, I will only be closing down the other as soon as I have a moment to do so.

And I've decided that this blog is just not about papercrafting, but about what random thoughts I have going through my mind. I have also been crocheting and decorating, so really, I am branching out in terms of my hobbies and interests. I guess what I'm saying is that I'm getting back to the old me again. Which, teehee, drives my husband bonkers.

Spring is here and spring brought me itchy eyes and sneezing fits. I look like I haven't slept in days, my eyes are so red!

It's been a relatively quiet week for us here in the shadows of Burnaby Mtn. We've been working away at our various projects for our little home. I hope to have a few more done before taking pictures of the living room. I'm on the lookout for some cool fabric to make pillow covers for a few more floor cushions.

Mirror - oh, my DH can be so extraordinarily great some days! He came home with a stupendously large black framed mirror for the dining room. Will take pics of it this weekend. Looks great up on the buffet.

Springbreak - 2 kidlets on break this week means a lot of energy needs to be burned up this weekend.

Sushi - had this at least 3 times this week. I think I will soon resemble a cali roll.

Where did the last 2 weeks go? I just realized that I missed posting my Five word for Friday last week. I think I easily get distracted by pretty things. But here goes:

I've spending a LOT of time blog surfing to get some badly needed inspiration to finish up on the re-decoration of the main floor of our townhome. I know that I don't want everything storebought or new, even. Just new to us. I'm looking to combine the old and new, which means it's taking much longer to find things on our tight budget. One thing that I am working on is a Crocheted Granny Square Afghan. Will post that when I'm done.

My weekly weigh-in at the diet center did not go very well. I'm up .8 lb and this was not a total surprise considering the poor menu choices I've been making. So, I've been putting on my mittens, winter coat and boots, and heading out for walks with the DH and our four-legged child, Koko.

So, I could not resist the little birds that I last posted about. Well, they arrived on Friday and today, I just had to run out and get a frame for them. So cute! I placed them on my kitchen windowsill. Just perfect.

Happy end of February! It's almost March, which brings another round of birthdays in our family.

And, today is Friday. How was your week? Here is mine, summed up in 5 words:

Lots of laundry left from our 5 day vacation in the mountains with lots of snow, cooked at least 3 times this week (!), watched our Muppets dvds (again), laced up the princess' figureskates for Wed. lessons, and finally, tonight I plan on getting out the staplegun to re-cover the dining room chairs!

Congratulations!

Now, for an apology for my lateness in announcing the winner. I realized after my family and I had left on vacation that I had not posted the name or contacted the winner. So, Ceridwen, I will be e-mailing you soon!

Unfortunately, while we were away, we received messages that my MIL had gone into the hospital and the doctors found that she had pneumonia and other health issues. Luckily, she will recover, but it will be a long road back to health. We are very fortunate to have her in our lives, and we wish her to be back to her active self.

My DH took some wonderful photos from the top of one of the runs at Sunpeaks, which I hope to share later this week, perhaps on Wordless Wednesday.

Help with my Creativity

I have been reading a great series on creativity over on Holly Becker's decor8 blog ( LINK ). Holly Becker is a regular contributor to the Real Simple magazine (my absolute favourite magazine, btw) and she has the best daily newsletter. I suggest you head on over and take a look around.

I came across her while looking for decorating ideas for the main floor of my home. There is so much to think about, it's almost overwhelming at times. We are on a super tight budget, as we will also be replacing the carpet with bamboo flooring this summer, and hoping to squeeze in a total renovation of the upstairs bathroom. One of the very minor plus' about the economic downturn is that now, we will be able to get choose quality contractors as they now have less work on the large new developments.

Ooooooh, it's Friday the 13th! Fortunately for me, I grew up with the belief that 13 is actually a good/lucky number.

Here's mine:

Arenas - spent my fair share of time at the ice arenas this week between the prince having hockey practices and the princess at skating lessons.

Tea - drank a lot of chai tea trying to stay warm at the arenas

Rendition - finally rented this movie that starred Reese Witherspoon, Jake Gyllenhall, to name just a few. I couldn't finish it as it was too disturbing in some of the interrogation scenes (hope I didn't spoil it for you).

Potholders - I'm going to start crocheting some new potholders in this cool blue yarn that I just bought this week.

Hearts - helped the princess get ready for today's big day of handing out Valentine's to her classmates and contributing "red" grapes to their class party. Too cute!

Nurse - That's what I played this week to my princess who had a very bad case of the sniffles that made her eyes red and her nose run like a tap. Poor thing was having trouble sleeping in the first half of the week.

Resistance - I was so proud of myself when I resisted the urge to buy some more home decor magazines, not once but 3 times this week. Resistance is not futile (any trekkies out there?)

Date - I was able to have a quick dinner date with my DH this week while the princess was at gymnastics and the prince at hockey practice. This doesn't happen nearly enough, but I'll take what I can get.

Success! - The princess is grudgingly learning to fall asleep without one of us in the room with her.

Cake - Birthday cake to be more specific. We are celebrating my nephew's special day tonight at his favourite burger joint Red Robin's. I am so looking forward to breaking my diet and enjoying a mushroom burger with fries. Totally chlolestoral laden, but I've been so good lately, I think I've earned this one.

I guess I have to consider myself tagged after reading this post at Scrap Out Loud .

6 Random things about myself -

I once owned 40-50 handbags, purses, totes, etc. In order to store them, I used 6 large rubbermaid containers. I am now down to only about 12 that fit in 1 container.
Rarely can I cook vegetables without OVER-cooking them. Don't know why, but I always lose track of time when I'm in the kitchen.
I've never travelled overseas, but one day I hope to see Paris and London.
I recently had to start covering the grey on my head. It was a very sad day at the salon for me :(.
Sneakers are my new best friend. Since leaving my corporate life, I have had the pleasure of dressing down every day for work. No more high heels! Yay!
And lastly - I am technologically challenged. I have had my blackberry for over 6 months, and my son had to teach me how to lock the keypad last week.

Now, for the fun part!

While this is not necessarily a picture that would inspire me creatively in my papercrafts, I think it would certainly help keep me in the kitchen for more than my usual 30 minutes. Most of my friends and family know that I'm not the most keen cook. I cook because I have to. I don't really enjoy the experience. But, if I had this kitchen with that view, well, I could be persuaded to spend more quality time in there ;).

Friday Five

Once again, this post is late. I spent 2 days off work fighting a cold and could not summon the energy to think of my 5 words for Friday. So, although I'm tardy, here they are:

Ox - Monday was Chinese New Year's Day - the Year of the Ox
Hockey - My DS had a late hockey game on Tuesday and early basketball practic the next morning. This creates one tired mom.
Red - I have had the colour red on my mind lately. Since we are redecorating, we will be using black as our anchor colour and red for accent. So, I've been looking for budget conscious ways to incorporate it into our home.
Tissues - no explanation needed
Takeout - lots of takeout and delivery this week as I have not been able to deal with cooking.

After 7 weeks of waiting and then finally confronting the Budget Blin*$ location in Bby., we have window coverings. We ordered 2 inch faux wood blinds for all but 3 small windows. Excuse after excuse had been given for why they had not arrived within the 3 week time span. But, I'm glad to be able to say that the saga has ended and we have dressed windows. No more nosey neighbours looking into our partially renovated home.

And I've started a little budget conscious "art" project. While perusing the hardwood floors are the big orange square, HD, I came across these handy little vinyl tiles that come in a package of four. So, I thought they might look good framed. Here they are before, (frame only $20Cdn at Wally's):

Add a 12 x 12 sheet of linen textured scrapbooking cardstock, and it comes out looking like this:

It's not permanently stuck together, since I'm not sure about the background colour. But, I'm also thinking it might be interested to be able to change the colours when I tire of the rusty red. Any thoughts?

Friday Five

I know, I know, it's actually Saturday. But, in my defense, I was super busy at work yesterday and then went to dinner with Granny to celebrate Chinese New Year's (which was super delish).

So, my five words for Friday this week:

Lighter
Confrontation

Blinds

Lighter - I was down 2 lbs on Wed at my weekly weigh-in! Yay for me!

Confrontation - I had to confront the sales rep at budget blin*s about the lies he was telling us about our order. It had been 7 weeks since we placed the order.

Paper - I had a mountain of paperwork cross my desk this week. So glad I've caught up!

Tea - my new hot drink of choice, for the time being. I've been going through a phase of coffee not tasting as good as it should (shocking, I know!)

Blinds - VICTORY! I have blinds on my windows now! Will have to post the pics when I get a chance.

Etsy Vintage Love

Along with my new obsession with buttons, I have found that I'm particularly drawn to vintage housewares. On a weekend getaway last spring, I dropped into a little antique store on the Sunshine Coast and bought what I thought was just a cute teapot. Turns out it's a 1940-50's vintage Melitta coffeepot/teapot! Well, now I'm constantly on the lookout for more vintage housewares, such as these:

Decorating on a Budget

Whenever I mess up a card I'm trying to create, I try to use as much of the original as possible to create something else. I think it's time we all try to be kind to our one and only earth.

I think I have developed an addiction to buttons. As I was looking at the H-U-G-E box of buttons that I have accumulated over the last few weeks, I envisioned them as a ball ornament for my tree. This is what I came up with, but lol, it turns out that I made it so large that it'll be much too heavy to hang on a tree! Still, I love the way it looks, so I think I'll put it on top of a glass or vase.

I just may have to visit Wally's to buy some smaller styro balls so I can make a few that are more suitable for hanging. They will bring more of a handmade feeling to my tree this year.

With the holidays fast approaching, it has been non-stop crafting for myself and the kids. I learned a technique a few years ago for making these cute triangle treat boxes. So, I thought they might be perfect for my princess to pass out Christmas treats to her little friends at school.

Each one holds 2 small chocolates and in lieu of Christmas cards, we decided that making little tags might be easier and less time consuming (which is great when your under a time crunch).

I really should have taken pictures along the way to create a tutorial, but as I said, we were in a hurry.

And I come back with a change of perspective, and new ideas of how I want my little business to run. I had previously been too hung up on what my competitors were doing with their shops and spending way too much time "chatting" online.

Using the pause button

I had to make a tough decision this past weekend regarding my Etsy shop. And I have decided to put the online store on hold until the Summer of 2008.

I've put in so much time and effort into starting the shop, learning the ropes, etc., while my personal life was on hold. I need to take a break, get things back in order, and then come back to the store. Etsy has been fabulous, but it does take a fair amount of time to promote the shop. Time that I can't spare until things are normal again.

Therefore, the online store will not be stocked up with inventory as it usually is. Instead, I will be taking small custom orders, so as not to abandon the customers that I've been so fortunate to meet over the last 12 months. But, I do plan to blog about my creations during the break. I am hoping to get back to the scrapbooking as my creative outlet, so there will be pictures.

A few thoughts on Craft Shows

Some observations about Craft Shows:

They are hard work if you are a vendor! I had a pretty simple setup for this weekend's show at Delbrook recCentre, but as I was looking around at others' setup, I was amazed at how much work is involved. Wish I had taken pictures of the other booths, but here is my humble table:

And always bring as much inventory as possible, because you just never know what might be popular. For instance, I thought that this card might be a good seller:

But, it turns out these little items were the most popular:

Sadly, I did not bring enough of them along with me. So, I did lose out on a sale.

And, snow is not the best weather to have on the day of a craft show.

A new camera for Amie

Oh thank goodness for Canon! I have been borrowing digital cameras from friends and family recently. See, I was having problems with my old one and I wanted to wait until I had time to research and shop for a new one. Well, I got a great one, check it out!

It's the Canon Powershot I5 IS. Great mid-sized camera, and I find it's easy to use. And the pictures are great. I'm in L-O-V-E with it!

Craft Show Season

So much to do, so little time! That's been the thought running through my head lately. And it's all because I've rented myself a table at the Delbrook Craft Fair in North Vancouver for December 1, 2007, 10am - 4pm.

This has caused me to worry about having enough inventory, finding a babysitter for that day, and whether anyone will want to buy my papercrafts!

Anyways, I've completed a few projects that are outside my usual greeting cards.

Christmas? I'm sure that some may think it's a little early to be planning for the holidays. Not me. I've already been doing some shopping at the fantastic online stores at Etsy.com . And I'm going to chance being non-PC (politically correct) by using the word CHRISTMAS this year. After all, that is what December 25th is called.

I've been asked by a few customer whether I will have Christmas cards in my shop this year. The answer is Yes. Here are a few pictures of what I have come up with some far. Though, I am sure that I will have a few more. They will be listed in sets.

It's been a funny 10 days, in terms of custom orders. I've had a handful of custom orders to fill, and 2 of my buyers have a total passion for the colour purple! Blossom Tags

I just love using flowers in my creations. Tonight's creative session was all about the Blossom Tags. I have been working on a custom order that calls for me to use these blossoms, so I made just a few more for fun and turned them into tags. These are great as price tags, gift tags, or as embellishments in scrapbooks.

Taking Risks

I'm not a Salesperson. Never have been, can't imagine ever being one. However, this holiday long weekend, I took a chance. I felt brave.

And so, I headed into a shop in Chase, BC, to see just how brave I could be. I had heard very nice things about this store and how they seemed to always have unique jewellery, clothing, and gift items. Well, I showed my cards and the new altered notebooks and address books. They showed great interest in the books! They are already carrying a line of greeting cards and don't wish to change that. Fair enough. But, the exciting part is that they purchased the few books that I took in, and ordered several more.

I will share their information, when I have their permission. But, I am doing the happy dance!

I think perhaps that the market for greeting cards is very competitive. However, altered and customized items are a different story. Much of what I do get in custom orders are usually for items that can't be mass produced by the giant companies. This is something that I will have to consider over the summer, as I work on expanding my product lines.

So, I have a lot to work ahead of me......but it's work that I'm so happy to have!

Here's a great gift for yourself or friends who are on the 9.5 month journey, also known as pregnancy. Here are 2 that I've just finished for a fabulous customer:

The examples above made to accomodate 4 x 6 inch photos, have hard covers, and are binder styles so that pages can be removed for ease of writing. For each month of the pregnancy, there is a page for journaling some things that may be happening, such as food cravings, mood, selections of nursery decor, etc. There's also pages to record doctor's appointments, names chosen, Mom and Dad's thoughts, and plenty of pages for photos.

And hopefully, these will be filled in throughout the pregnancy and will eventually become keepsakes for baby.

I've been crazy busy filling custom orders. Which is a great thing, but it also means some very late nights. Good thing that I'm a night owl! I will be posting pics of those as soon as I have them completed. I'm currently working on 2 Pregancy Journals and 2 Father's Day projects.

Inspiration

As I sat down in my studio this morning, the sun was shining, and I was inspired by this sight....

That's my stash of paper flowers and the second is what I have on the corner of my desk by the window. I've inherited a love of flowers from my Mom and it shows in my work. I often reach for the paper or silk flowers for embellishing the cards just after I've laid the foundation with cardstock and paper.

And to just to make the morning even more perfect....a steaming hot cup of coffee!

Custom Orders and a Sale

Just wanted to share the happiness I feel for this business! And if I were more outgoing...I'd probably be dancing around right now.

I've just received my 3rd custom order this week, and it's only Wednesday! It feels so good when my design work gets acknowledgement like this. 1 has been for a quantity order of my notecards, and 2 more for personalized journals. And since I love paper art, I'm more than happy to lose a few zzzzz's at night to get these orders filled.
